Modeling the Transition to Turbulence in Plane Couette Flow

چکیده
Numerical simulations of a model of plane Couette flow focusing on its in-plane spatio-temporal properties are used to study the dynamics of turbulent spots. While the core of a spot is filled with small scale velocity fluctuations, a large scale flow extending far away and occupying the full gap between the driving plates is revealed upon filtering out small scales. It is characterized by streamwise inflow towards the spot and spanwise outflow from the spot, giving it a quadrupolar shape. A correction to the base flow is present within the spot in the form of a spanwise vortex with vorticity opposite in sign to that of the base flow. The Reynolds stresses are shown to be at the origin of this recirculation, whereas the quadrupolar shape of the in-plane flow results from the transport of this recirculation by the base flow that pumps it towards the spot in the streamwise direction and flushes it in the spanwise direction to insure mass conservation. These results shed light on earlier observations in plane Couette flow or other wall flows experiencing a direct transition to turbulence by spot nucleation. pa st el -0 06 75 06 8, v er si on 1 28 F eb 2 01 2 48 On the outskirts of a turbulent spot

Instability of Plane Couette Flow
The energy gradient theory has been proposed with the aim of better understanding the mechanism of flow transition from laminar flow to turbulent flow. In this theory, it is suggested that the transition to turbulence depends on the relative magnitudes of the energy gradient amplifying the disturbance and the viscous friction damping that disturbance. For a given flow geometry and fluid propert...
متن کاملTransition from the Couette-Taylor system to the plane Couette system.
We discuss the flow between concentric rotating cylinders in the limit of large radii where the system approaches plane Couette flow. We discuss how in this limit the linear instability that leads to the formation of Taylor vortices is lost and how the character of the transition approaches that of planar shear flows. In particular, a parameter regime is identified where fractal distributions o...
متن کاملThe dynamics of transition to turbulence in plane Couette flow
In plane Couette flow, the incompressible fluid between two plane parallel walls is driven by the motion of those walls. The laminar solution, in which the streamwise velocity varies linearly in the wall-normal direction, is known to be linearly stable at all Reynolds numbers (Re). Yet, in both experiments and computations, turbulence is observed for Re & 360. In this article, we show that when...

The aim of the present study is deriving an analytical solution to incompressible thermal flow in a micro-Couette geometry in the presence of a pressure gradient using Burnett equations with first- and second-order slip boundary conditions. The lower plate of the micro-Couette structure is stationary, whereas the upper plate moves at a constant velocity. Non-dimensional axial velocity and tempe...
متن کاملSubcritical transition to turbulence in plane Couette flow.
Various experiments have outlined generic properties of the subcritical transition to turbulence in plane Couette flow. A low order model of a self-sustaining process has been derived by Waleffe [11] from the Navier-Stokes equations for a sinusoidal shear flow. This paper investigates the weakly non-linear properties and the phase space analysis of this model, including the dependence on the mo...
